Your Company Always Has At Least One Employee – You

The idea is to work on the business and not in the business, to have it function optimally without the owner present.  Otherwise the business owner doesn’t own the business, they own a job!  How does a business owner get the business to work without him or her, to own the business, yet to be free of it, with the assurance employees will work without needing the owner present?  Leveraging is one way to free the business owner to do whatever they love to do, rather than what they have to do.

Leveraging can include multi tasking, conserving energy to focus on the most important parts of the business.  Hiring people who share the business owner’s vision and values frees them up, knowing the work will get done with minimal supervision.  A clearly defined operations manual and job descriptions for each employee structure the desired controls, ensuring systems and processes are followed through. Updating technology and automation increases productivity in the business.  Creating a working infrastructure frees the business owner from needing to feel they have to do all the important things themselves.  Part of that infrastructure is having an advisory board, and R and D team to assist in business improvements and creating a brand identity.  Focusing on customer education about the uniqueness and benefits of the product or service, networking and marketing it are necessary for success.  Finding the team of professionals to manage and run the business allows the business owner simply to oversee it.  They need to build a business model so the business is not dependent on them.

Working on the business, not in it, the business owner is free to see the big picture, keeping focused on the vision, always building closer, growing and following the company’s mission.  If the business owner is having FUN, accomplishing what they set out to do, they are working on their business!

The business owner’s business is their investment.  It should be their responsibility and objective to get it to the point of a common stock or corporate bond, so others would want to invest in it also.
